Basic Copyediting

Involves making sure the rules pertaining to grammar, syntax, usage, punctuation, capitalization are consistent with standards of English language and usage. Also included is the way numbers are treated.

Deep Copyediting

Involves the organization and presentation of the manuscript. Segments may be rewritten to enhance style or eliminate confusion.

Developmental Editing

Involves developing a manuscript into a coherent, readable work so that the work is well-organized, appropriate in tone, style, and format, clear and articulate, and consistent in its approach.

After a document has been copyedited, proofreading occurs. This involves looking for consistency in usage and presentation, and accuracy in text, images and layout. (The proofreader is not responsible for author or copy-editor’s errors.)
